For the first time, the term “Digital Marketing” came into existence along with the coming of the internet and the development of web platforms in the 1990s. During those days, web platforms only allow users to find the information they want but they were restricted from sharing their information on the web. So, marketers were not sure of the digital platform as the internet was not widespread.
Later in 1993, an era of digital marketing began after the first Clickable web ad banner went live and Hotwired bought a few banners for their advertising.
In the year 1994, Yahoo! was launched as the first E-Commerce web transacted over the Net market. Yahoo! was found going well and in 1996, a few smaller search engines like HotBot, LookSmart, and Alexa were found to be launched.
It was in the year 1997 that the launch of the first Social Media site called SixDegree.com.
The birth of GOOGLE was in 1998 and in that year Microsoft launched MSN and Yahoo! Launched yahoo! Web Search.
The Internet went widespread, SixDegrees.com shut down and the smaller search engines were wiped out in the year 2000.
In the following year 2001, the First mobile marketing campaign(Universal Music) started, and a year after Linkedin was launched followed by WordPress and MySpace in the year 2003.
The year 2004 is when Gmail was launched, Google goes public, and then Facebook goes live. And YouTube formally launched in 2005 and the digital marketing platform broaden years after another.
Soon after Microsoft launches MS Live Search, Twitter Came into existence, and Amazon’s e-commerce sales already crossed $10 billion while Split Testing in Marketing started in 2006.
In 2007, Hulu founded the web-streaming service. In the same year, iPhone and Tumblr were also launched.
China was seen as overtaking the US in the number of internet users and Spotify is found launching in 2008. And in 2009, Google launches instant for real-time search engine results while Google’s Affiliate Network was shut down. In the following year, Whatsapp was launched and Google launched Google Buzz.
Google Buzz Shutdown and Google+ and Google Panda were launched in 2011. And in the same year, the web users' figure overtakes the figure for TV viewership among youth.
In 2012, Google launched Google Knowledge Graph, and in 2013 Yahoo! Acquired Tumblr.
Mobile exceeds PC internet usage. Facebook Messenger app, tailored ads on Linkedin, and Facebook’s Look Back were Launched in 2014. Facebook also acquired WhatsApp in that year.
